I teach smart phones and computer skills across Melbourne. My business evolved through my passion for hanging out with older folk and my unofficial role as tech support for my mother and all her friends! It was also becoming increasingly obvious to me that many people were being left behind in this rapidly moving age of technology. I’m a primary and middle school teacher by training but wasn’t enjoying teaching in the school system my teaching methods didn’t fit the school system. I prefer individualised teaching practices and keeping students engaged by encouraging them to be the driving force of the curriculum design. Most of my students have more knowledge than they realise, but life gets in the way of them reaching their learning potential. If I hear a student say they’re too old to learn, I have a few things to say, but the most appropriate one is ‘if you’re not learning, you’re not alive.’

I teach computer classes at Bridge Darebin, Preston. I purchased my first computer in the 1980s and to this day, messing about with computers is still my favourite thing to do today, followed closely by art and craft. I have always been in awe of a computer’s capabilities. One of the first things I ask my students is "what do you want out of computers?", and I like to build my lessons around that. That way my students are able to take an active role in structuring the course. I have a university degree in sociolinguistics and gender studies, was a personal carer in aged care for 12 years and have completed a diploma in Community Services. I have also taught computers to older people on a one-on-one basis in their own homes. All of my experiences have given me great insight into the issues facing older people today and communicating within our diverse society. I volunteer in reception on Mondays, so call in and say hello. I’d love to see you!

Making a positive impact in education is still something that really excites me. I teach both smart phone and computer classes in the inner southern suburbs so I might see you soon!
